“I think this is particularly exciting for patients in the Triangle because they have the ability to combine their medical records from both Duke and UNC within one app — Apple Health — and pull together a more complete picture of their medical history that they can carry in their pocket on a device they use constantly,” Katie McMillan, associate director of Duke Mobile App Gateway said in an email.

“This is part of a tectonic shift towards patients having ownership over their health data,” she said. “In the near future I see patients ... combining records from health systems with their own data from connected devices like fitness trackers and blood pressure cuffs.”

“This will help us understand people and improve their care both inside and outside of the walls of a hospital,” McMillan said.
